Mapuche ponchos (trarikanmakuñ) are typically indigo, with red examples being much rarer. According to the Textile Museum of Canada, “[t]he red colour is symbolic of power connected with blood and vital energy. The main design is the stepped cross which represents stylized ancestor figures.” This is a beautiful example, with some fading on one side.
