Taylor A. “Tad” and Sandy Dale have been gallery owners in Santa Fe, NM, since 1987, featuring quality tribal art from Africa, Oceania, Australia, Indonesia, and the Americas. In late 2018, after 31 years, they moved the gallery to their home (open by appointment) and also became grandparents!
During 1977–87 Tad and Sandy were based in London, traveling throughout the UK and returning to the United States with their young daughter (b. 1983) twice a year to visit dealers and collectors, always stopping in Santa Fe to participate in the summer art shows.
Tad and Sandy both grew up in Oregon and became high-school sweethearts, marrying in 1972 after completing Oregon State University, with respective degrees in business and education. Their desire to travel led them to undertake extensive overland journeys, with a ten-month honeymoon to Central Asia in 1972–3 followed by a five-month road trip throughout Central America in 1975. These trips ignited their interest in indigenous peoples and art forms, and soon thereafter they opened Odyssey Arts on the Oregon Coast to showcase their collections from Asia and Central America (1975–77).
Their original intention in traveling to London in 1977 was to buy a used Landrover and spend a year traveling back to more remote areas of Central Asia. There was a waiting list for Landrovers, so Tad and Sandy had a chance to look around the antique markets of London, which they found to be filled with treasures from the days of the British Empire. And so they decided to stay—for ten years—actively collecting and expanding their horizons in Europe.
The arrival of their son in 1987 led them back to Santa Fe, where they opened Channing, Dale, Throckmorton-Fine Arts of Native Peoples Gallery (1987–92), after which the Dales had independent galleries in a few locations in downtown Santa Fe. While raising their two children in Santa Fe, they also participated in many tribal art shows from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle to Chicago to New York to Brussels (BRUNEAF, 2002–10). In 2009–11, with their children out of the nest, Tad and Sandy rented an apartment in the arts district of Brussels, which brought them back to a European community of collectors and dealers and led to many lifelong friendships. They now welcome visitors to their home studio in Santa Fe to view over 40 years of collecting. Come and visit!
