A fine and early example of a canoe prow ornament, unusual for its lack of pigmentation and shell inlay. The upper part of the head was intentionally perforated, perhaps to hold frigate bird feathers or another article of ceremonial use. These ornaments functioned as striking figureheads on war canoes in the western islands and are thought to depict a mythical ancestor. This particular ornament shows good patina and signs of use.
